"Diary of a Young Naturalist" not only celebrates the breath-taking beauty of the natural world but also casts a poignant spotlight on autism and the triumph over severe anxiety.
In his debut book, Dara McAnulty offers a lyrical exploration of the natural world. Dara is an autistic teenager navigating the upheaval of home and school, alongside challenges to his mental health. He finds solace in his writing. His narrative shifts between profound darkness and radiant light, vividly recounting sensory encounters with creatures like blackbirds, whooper swans, and red kites.
For the cover design I tried to reflect both Dara’s literally meaning of the words he uses to convey beauty, through fonts, colour and treatment, yet also trying to convey the deeper themes portrayed. I wanted the design to feel timeless, uplifting and give confidence to others. Just as the book breaks the boundaries of traditional nature-writing, appealing to all readerships, hopefully so too does the design.
